Skomer Stories, Episode 2: Visitors and Volunteers

The second episode of Skomer’s mixed media Skomer Stories series is presented as a podcast as the team are currently off island. In this episode, I give a round-up of 2024 on the island and interview two of our previous long-term volunteers about the experiences on Skomer.

Navigating Now Podcast

Last year, I co-hosted two episodes of Navigating Now, a D of E funded podcast designed and co-led by young people. With youth voices leading the discussion, the podcast aimed to address key issues for young people. In this episode, I shared thoughts on environmental challenges facing young people, alongside guests including Chris Packham. Listen here.

In Conversation Podcast

During lockdown, I embarked on a podcasting project, speaking to other young naturalists from across the UK over Zoom. As we were all home-based during this time, we discussed the wildlife and habitats around our homes and towns that kept us going during these uncertain times, whilst also deep diving into a topic close to the heart of the podcast guest.

Equipment was limited and internet access poor, giving this recordings a “rough and ready” feel. However, I liked this about them – it stripped back any gloss and demonstrated genuine connections between young naturalists at a crucial time.

A few of these episodes are included below.

AI In Ecology

In this episode with ecologist Rosie Seager-Jones, we discuss AI in ecology and how Rosie used nature to cope with lockdown.

What Is Intelligence?

Here, zoologist Tom Land and I discuss intelligence – what is it? How did it evolve? And do we have any?

Plastic Nurdle Pollution

This episode was recorded with naturalist Jenny Pearson. We discuss plastic nurdle pollution and how how it’s devastating our oceans.

Garden Pond Wildlife

Recorded with environmentalist Rhia Chapple, we discuss pond wildlife.
